How Much Sand Do I Need for a Sand Filter?

A common question for pool owners with sand filters, is how much sand is needed, when replacing pool filter sand.

The correct amount of sand is very important, not too much and not too little, for proper sand filter operation.

If you are unsure of your sand filter make and model, you could eyeball measure the tank diameter, or divide the tank circumference by pi - 3.14, to find tank diameter.

Many filter tank model numbers indicate the tank diameter, i.e. Hayward S180T sand filters have an 18" diameter filter tank.
