Chlorine Floaters for Pools & Spas
Floating pool chlorinators and floating brominators maintain a steady flow of chemicals into your pool, even when the pump is not running. Floaters also prevent problems from using tablets in the pool skimmer. Add 1 inch or 3 inch tabs (or sticks) to the floating chlorine dispenser, close the lid, adjust the baffle vents, and simply place into the pool. Floating pool chlorinators have a top hole so you can tie-off the floater to a rope hook or ladder rail.
Chlorine floaters are the most common choice for above ground pool owners. Do not use the skimmer as a chlorinator, which will cause hose and pump problems, unless you run the pump 24/7. If you do not have an automatic chemical feeder, a pool chlorine floater is the next best thing. Floating chlorinators ensure that chlorine is being dispensed constantly in your pool so that you can be confident of sanitary pool water.
How many chlorine tablets to use in a pool floater? To determine the number of tablets and best baffle setting on a floating chlorinator, test the chlorine level over a few days, to find the sweet spot of 1.0-2.0 ppm of free chlorine. If the chlorine tests low, add more tablets and/or open the baffle vents fully, and if the chlorine tests high, remove some tablets, or close the baffle vents more. Most pools use about one 3" chlorine tablet for every 5,000 gallons of pool water, replaced every 5-7 days. Set a reminder so you don't forget to refill the floater with tabs, or use the Pop-up Chlorinator, which lets you know when it is empty.
Winter pool floaters? Because it contains no chlorine, our winter pool floaters cannot stain plaster or bleach vinyl, even if they sink or tip over. In The Swim non-chlorine winter floaters are not sold separately however, only as part of our Pool Closing Kits. You can use a chlorine tablet floater during winter, with careful placement. Close the floater baffle vents fully, and tie-off the floater over the middle of the pool with a tight rope connected on each side of the pool.
In The Swim’s selection of floating chlorine dispensers range in size from traditional blue and white floaters that hold 5-6 tablets, to the larger Cool Shark and Jumbo Duck Floating Chlorinator, and the newest Jumbo Floating Chlorinator, all of which can fit 8-9 tablets. These large chlorine floaters are suitable for pools over 25,000 gallons. They are often used as winter floaters, and also for smaller pools - with the baffles nearly closed, a small pool could go 2-3 weeks between refills.
